Springcon Tomorrow!

I'll be MCBA's Springcon tomorrow with original art, prints, and a willingness to draw a sketch for money. So stop by and say hello.

Apollo 13 adjusted cover

First run through I drew the original flight crew, forgetting that Ken Mattingly was pulled for the possibility of measles and replaced with Jack Swigert. (sigh) So here are the floating head of Swigert and the adjusted cover art.

Apollo 13 B&W cover art

Side project update

Today required a great deal of time to print a series of blue line template pages for a book on the Apollo 13 mission. This is a slow, tedious process requiring that the printer be set up for each individual page. And each print takes long enough to be annoying, but not long enough to really go do other things. So in between prints I worked on laying down the color flats for an illustration of surrealism.

For those unfamiliar with the idea of flats (not the shoes),  it's the first step in digitally coloring artwork. You select areas and fill them in with a color. Any color at all provided that each area of the work has it's own. The flats are kept in their own layer which is then copied to be the active colors. This new layer is where you then go in and do all your painting. The flats layer is made invisible and becomes a method for selecting specific areas in the work as you paint.

But as deadlines on a few jobs press closer and closer we'll have to hold off on the actual painting for a little longer. In the meantime, enjoy the flats.
