It's fun how something in the background can completely change the mood of the work. As a single illustration i think i would go map. I like the depth and narrative it adds to the piece. However, if this image is intended for a series, I think I would go no map. Depending on the other images in the series of course. Tough call though.

No map. Empty space in the background helps set off the chaos of the foreground.

If you're looking to give it a sense of narrative, go with the map. It sort of foreshadows the journey the ark is about the take by evoking the sense of traveling.

The map was indeed the winner. For those interested it's an old map of the area in which the original Noah's ark story supposedly happened.
