Despite a strong urge to produce some kind of background, ignoring the solid black background or possibly considering it as a mid ground, it seems that leaving it as transparent keeps it poppy and visually efficient. Maybe someday I'll stop over-thinking these things. There is also the urge to go in and brush out layers and layers of colors to make it more rounded and fleshy but that seems to contradict the cartoon feel of the piece. Again, probably over-thinking.

Look at some Ichira Oda paintings. He's got some strong concept of when and where to be complex and when not to be.
